“Our role as professionals, educators, citizens and builders is design leadership to realize a quality civic environment for all our citizens. This suggests a shift in emphasis - from buildings that act as objects to buildings that collectively make and inform the Urban Public Realm.

Those streets, squares, parks and public buildings that accommodate our public life:

-Inform a spirit of community- which is greater than the sum of the parts.

-That creates a sustainable symbiotic relationship with nature.

-Create a collection of places with memory and future.

-Provide a place where all citizens not only live, work, play and learn, together – but communicate and celebrate togetherness.”

“We’re not building a front yard for the Aquarium, we’re building a front porch for the city.”

“The combined public spaces and gardens are treated as a microcosm of the region, including its urban grid, mountainous terrain and riverbank configuration. The entire site is articulated by a series of thirty-five longitudinal bands of paving, water and vegetation. These ribbons evolve chronologically from the geometry of the city to the organic undulations of the waterfront and, in certain locations, rise upward from the horizontal surface to form bridges, performance spaces, seating areas and fountains.”
